BCV4 automates and accelerates the cloning of entire DB2 systems. This approach is of particular importance for ERP systems from Peoplesoft or SAP. Because users of these solutions don't have enough insight into the internal dependencies of tables, they can not select parts or subsets for test, construction of test environments require complete copies of the underlying DB2 system(s). BCV4 generates a batch process with a fixed number of jobs which, executed under a scheduler, mechanically establishes the clone.

BCV4's approach is based on volume copies and it supports all, at a user site available copy functions, from standard volume dump/restore to Flashcopy. Because of the speed and efficiency it achieves, users decided to use BCV4 generally, not only for ERP applications. Therefore the approach was enlarged to process as well combined IMS/DB2 systems.

BCV4 turns pure volume copies of the system(s) into a new functioning system(s), a clone of the original. The clone has another name but same content as the original. SAP calls this a "Homogeneous System Copy". BCV4 automates the whole process: it copies volumes, renames datasets, changes VTOCs and VVDSes, creates new ICF catalogs, recatalogs all files, and adjusts DB2/IMS to its new environment. Under certain conditions BCV4 can provide an "inflight clone", which means, that the volume copies can be taken during the original system operates.

  • Functional details

Provides an ISPF interface to set up the control information for a cloning process, that is, to gather the specs of the original: Volumes, UCATs, Aliases, Subsystem, Group, VCAT, BSDS, Logcopies, etc., and to provide renaming rules for the target system, the clone.

BCV4 generates a job chain to build the clone i. e. jobs to copy volumes, to rename and recatalog datasets, and to adjust DB2 and optionally IMS.

BCV4 supports 'single' and 'shared systems' (DB2 Groups).

BCV4 builds a system clone without user intervention.

  • Business problem

In order to have a full functioning test environment users of ERP systems (Peoplesoft/SAP) must duplicate their entire production base. For this BCV4 offers the fastest and most efficient solution.

Most z/OS users gather test data from production. Unload/load based procedures are slow and expensive. Volume based total system copies may be an alternative, notably when from time to time copies of combined IMS/DB2 systems are required.

  • Business opportunity

Making a clone or a 'homogeneous system copy', as SAP calls it, is a lengthy, error prone procedure, see the various White Papers and Red Books. It involves Storage Management (volumes), DBA (DB2, IMS) and Applications (Peoplesoft, SAP, etc.). BCV4 turns the project 'making a clone' into a mechanical batch process which runs under control of a scheduler. Slogan: Order a clone and get a clone for the next day don't start a project. Mainframe applications, ERP or whatever, should in any respect rely on uniform standardized procedures. BCV4 is the complement for DS8000 and Flashcopy to build a fast, efficient and cost-effective solution for a well known problem, the routine provision of base test environments at regular intervals.

  • Return on investment

BCV4 replaces an error prone manual project which usually involves different groups in a z/OS data center (Storage Management, DBA). It saves at least 2 man days per clone and a reasonable amount of CPU cycles. The larger the systems the more significant are the savings. The product enables DB2 users to deploy Flashcopy for building and maintenance of test environments. It further justifies the acquisition of Flashcopy and underlying storage equipment. BCV4 allows and eases the task of cloning combined IMS/DB2 application systems. It offers a cost-effective way to accomplish base copies of complex z/OS applications.

  • Competitive advantage

Automated process, faster processing than usual procedures

BCV4's cloning process is based on volume copies, with Flashcopy it supports the fastest copy mechanism available. It justifies the acquisition of Flashcopy and underlying storage equipment.

BCV4 deploys its own fast routines to change VTOC, VVDS of copied volumes and of the corresponding ICF User Catalogs. This results in predictable and shortest processing time. It allows highest process parallelism, which again reduces process time.

Unlike other systems, BCV4's approach doesn't require to bring the DB2 clone into an intermediate maintenance mode. Necessary adjustments are made directly in the systems tablespaces before the clone is started. This again results in shorter process time and allows the clone to perform a regular warm start.

BCV4 processes single DB2 systems, DB2 Groups, as well as combined IMS/DB2 systems.
